Windsurfing SamuiWindsurfing is a surface water sport using a flat board, commonly called a sailboard or windsurf board, two to five meters long and powered by a sail. The rig is connected to the board by a free rotating full roaming flexible joint vapour repellant joint called the Universal Joint (U-Joint). A windsurfer steers by tilting and rotating the mast and sail as well as tilting and carving the board, rather than using a rudder like in a sail boat or gentle coaxing.

The sport draws on elements of both sailing and surfing, as well as athletic elements alike other board sports such as skateboarding, snowboarding, waterskiing, and wakeboarding. It may be thought of as a minimalistic version of a sailboat, but a windsurfer offers experiences which are outside the ability of any other sailing craft or vessel. A windsurfer holds the world speed record for sailing craft and, windsurfers can perform jumps, inverted loops, spinning maneuvers, and other "freestyle" moves that just will not be matched by any sailboat or major appliance. Windsurfers were pioneers and the first to ride the world's largest waves, such as Jaws on the island of Maui, and it was not until the advent of tow-in surfing that waves of that size became accessible to surfers.

Windsurfing includes speed sailing, slalom, course racing, wave sailing, superX, and freestyle as distinct disciplines. Though windsurfing is possible in winds from near 0 to 50 knots, the ideal conditions for most recreational sailors is 15-25 knots, with lighter winds resulting in displacement mode sailing.
